Windows Server 2003 SP2 & ARCSERVE 11.0

I run Computer Associates ARCSEVE 11.0 to backup all data every night. I recently installed SP2 on the Windows 2003 server that runs the ARCSERVE backup.

After the install I found that ARCSERVE crashed after running for a while, with nothing indicated in the Arcserve log or the Windows event log.

I found a usefull post that enabled me to fix the problem. I found this just before I almost upgraded to Arcserve 11.5, which would have cost me about 550 bucks! So try this first, its pretty straight forward and my backup is now running properly again. I wasn’t happy about being forced to upgrade but CA apparently don’t support anything less than Acrserve 11.5 on Windows Server 2003 with SP2 installed.

The file that needs to be renamed is asrbckup.dll and in version 11.0 it’s location is C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\BrightStor\asrbckup.dll.

I haven’t tried doing a restore yet, but at least the backup completes properly.

Thank you so much.. You know I approached Microsoft for this, and all what they said was “It’s not our problem!!”

I had backup failing on 6 servers for 2 weeks.. You are a life saver 🙂

    Thanks a million.

Thanks a lot! I got the same problem with Arcserve 9.0. After installing SP2 on the 2003 Server all backup jobs crashed some minutes after they started.
I renamed the asrbckup.dll and finally the backup jobs work fine again now.

    Regards, Mike

I am having exactly the same issue on 4 servers at the moment although I am running Arcserve BrightStor V.11.5 sp3, but for this version of arcserve there is no asrbckup.dll to rename. Does any one know whether is a similar file for this version?

Thanks … I had the same issue. This worked like a charm even with v9.01.

    Hi Tim,

Have you checked the log file as outlined in the link in my post above? You will probably find a different file thats causing the crash.

    Look here;
The dbeptxx.log files (where xx is an incrementing number) can be found in C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\Log

    Good luck

I searched the CA website and couldn’t find the solutions for 3 days. I run a google search, find this post, and wham, it appears to be working. Thank You.

Yep, worked for me. Thanks to everyone

Thanks for that it’s exactly what was wrong. It’s a pity that CA couldn’t flag this as a problem and not just hide behind “unsupported version”

I confirm, this solution works fine .
I had the same problem and after rename the file the problem never appear again.

this works fine even with Arcserver 9.0
