Facebook and SPAM – The size of it!

I read somewhere recently that Facebook has got over 750 Million, that's 750,000,000 members and growing fast (as every business owner jumps on the bandwagon for cheap traffic and instant buyer riches…).

An article on the Huffington Post recently about Facebooks automated system for dealing with (or trying to at least) deal with spam was very interesting. Not because it automatically dealt with what it thought was spam, incorrectly in this instance. No we've had automatic spam removal for years with email filters etc.

What's caught my attention was;

"Our systems classify over 10 billion actions (suspicious logins, friend requests, etc.) and pieces of content (messages, Wall posts, etc.) every day," Noyes said. "Of course, no system is perfect, and we do sometimes make mistakes."

Ten billion actions a day! That's 10,000,000,000! We're talking bailout numbers here!

Internet Marketing SPAM k1b0rg Doorway Loader v0.2

I found this script in the root of my WordPress blog the other day. It’s a script that generates links to a web server in Germany. The links point to advertizing pages etc. It’s a nasty pain in the ass and you should delete it and block the server ip etc. I have no idea how it got there yet, but I’ve been trying a lot of different plugins lately so who knows…

Goodbye Blog Comment Spam

If you’ve been blogging for a while you will have noticed how the spam community (if I may call it that) arbitrarily posts its sticking crud to your blog as comments. Lord knows why they bother. But a pain in the butt they are to boot!

I’ve been manually dealing with this for a while, deleting anywhere from 1 to 10+ pages (yes pages) daily from the comments awaiting moderation on my blog.

Today I created a WordPress account, got an API key and installed AKISMET anti-spam plugin. It seems to be the best one, is free unless you’re making wads-o-cash from your blogging and is written by one of the WordPress gurus, so should be pretty robust I would think.

I’ll let you know how it goes and goodbye you stinking spammer turds, I flush you down my blog toilet!
